Welcome to my neck of the woods. Supernatural British Columbia! What screws it up is the government and NDP voters. Aside of that, it’s God’s country.

From here also and unfortunately there is not much choice when it comes to leadership - we can opt for the NDP or the Libs - both suck and I doubt the outcome would have been much different if the others had been in power when Covid occurred. All corrupt to the core. Also it was much more beautiful 30 years ago - now you need to travel 2- 4 hours before you can get to pristine beauty.

Yes what you say is true.

Are you aware of what is happening at Fairy Creek on Vancouver Island?

Gavin, thanks for the link. My knowledge of the situation at Fairy Creek has now increased many-fold. Adding to the injury, is the connection between British energy company Drax and the cutting of old-growth in BC... to produce wood pellets to be burned in the UK. What a sad state of affairs.

Expand full comment

Yes, thousand year old trees for wood pellets and pulp... we live in a totally insane world.

I just keep planting seeds and hoping that nurturing life where I am serves to balance out the equation in some small way for future generations. Thanks for the comment <3

VERY painful to read. Thank you for writing about it. Ecocide. Democide. The powers-that-shouldn't-be need to be cut down and composted themselves....

Expand full comment

It was painful to write too, I have spent time around some of those trees they chopped down near Fairy Creek (and those they intend to chop this summer).

I felt compelled to do my best to shine a light on the situation and the brave efforts of the forest defenders, so I did, despite many tears and needing to stop researching/writing for days at a time.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

True. And true. I would recommend the pristine beauty of Yoho National Park at the BC/AB border. Lake O'Hara. But, then again, my last visit was 10 years ago...

Have you ever been to Cathedral Lakes Provincial Park ? It is really special (crystal clear alpine lakes, babbling brooks flowing through alpine flower fields and towering cliffs that offer a view of mountains for hundreds of kilometers in all directions) and less busy than the parks that have highways through them.

Expand full comment

Unfortunately not! My adventures in the southeast of the province have mostly been Okanaghan. I remember a couple of years back, I was hiking a trail through some farmland in Lake Country, and I severely pissed a bird that was nesting. To this date, I still have no clue about what kind of bird it was, but I stayed way away from that spot after that! I will put Cathedral Falls in my to-do list.

Sorry, Cathedral Lakes!

I lived in Okanagan for many years and love that area too but Cathedral Lakes Provincial Park is something else. I uploaded a few pics from a trip I took up there a couple years back so you can see what I mean https://archive.org/details/cathedrallakesbeauty

There is a lodge up there if you prefer that over backcountry camping and they have a service where they drive you from the Okanagan valley waaayyy up to just under 7000 ft above sea level at their lodge too (so it can either be a very relaxing and easy going journey or quite an amazing work out depending on how you get up there and how far you hike into the park).

Depends on your starting point and your perspective...on the Island, I’m surrounded by pristine beauty. Even right in the city, as Jessica’s beautiful photos reveal, there is beauty everywhere.

Expand full comment

It certainly does depend on one's perspective, and from the perspective of the ancient trees that used to call the land where the city you live in now as home, what is there now is a graveyard and an abomination... from the perspective of the indigenous people's who once called that land home and lived in balance with those ancient forests they might describe that city as a colonial monument to pillaging, theft and disrespecting the living Earth by cutting down her lungs and suffocating her body with cement.

For the most part the dominant perspective in our modern western culture is the anthropocentric perspective (see : https://gavinmounsey.substack.com/p/the-rise-of-anthropocentrism-bright for more info) and while we who live within it may find cities to be beautiful to our eyes and mind, from the perspective of all the other beings we share this world with, cities (existing in the way we currently build and maintain them) are a sort of skin cancer, eating away at the living Earth, full of humans and the corporations they support that convert living things into dead products, spreading out in all directions.

Agreed, I am just retired now, and would love to move there for my retirement due to the climate, but not a chance until the scum are removed from power. Thinking about Mexico, actually.

Consider El Salvador. As far as I understand, there has been a massive effort to neutralize the MS-13, and after the adoption of Bitcoin as currency, a revival of the country's economy. Don't take my word for it, do your own research. A link to get started: https://bitcoinist.com/el-salvadors-new-bill-offers-tax-breaks-for-tech-innovation/

Thanks for the beautiful scenes of nature and beauty around us. I'm trying to re-connect with people whose beauty was buried by the politics of fear.

Beautiful photos!

I was born in Van city and raised in Whistler for my early years, so those places and beings in your pics are very familiar to me, thanks for the taste of home :)

Here are a couple pics of me on Vancouver island with some ancient trees that are near and dear to my heart https://archive.org/details/ancienttrees_202303/82302090_565008011014278_1898533595333525504_n.jpg

I always smile and feel that I love in another country altogether here in Saskatoon, SK as we have tons of snow and spring is dragging it’s feet. It’s going to be -18 for a low this coming week. Ugh! Enjoy lovely BC!! ☺️👍🏻

In my Alberta days, my fave temp was -10. It was balanced: the right dry air, easy to wear for, and I could sneak to the pub from the classroom in a T-shirt!

Your hiatus was well deserved.

The war that is ongoing might well wear you out; pace yourself, please!
